How Edo Kiriko patterns are created

All of Saiho's Edo Kiriko glassware is handcrafted by skilled Kiriko craftsmen who have inherited techniques passed down from the Edo period and create exquisite pieces based on traditional patterns.

01 Allocation

The basic lines that will serve as the basis for cutting the glass are drawn on the surface of the glassware.

02 Rough grinding

The glass vessel is carved along the notch using a rotating, disc-shaped diamond wheel.

03 Medium print

A diamond wheel that is finer than the rough grinding wheel is used to further dig into the rough grinding area.

04 Stone hanging

A disc made of a grinding stone is rotated to smooth and even the grinding surface.
The quality of this process will greatly affect the shine of the next polishing.

05 Polishing

The stone surface is polished using a circular wooden board (Paulownia), cork board, or rubber board, applying moistened fine polishing sand.
The surface is then finished by buffing with a cloth buffing machine.
