Interview with an Edo Kiriko craftsman
Aiko Matsuzaki talks about traditional Japanese beauty and the joy of creation
1. Why did you become an Edo Kiriko craftsman?
Matsuzaki : I've been interested in craftsmanship since I was a child, and I was particularly drawn to traditional Japanese patterns. When I was studying glass art as a student, I came into contact with Edo Kiriko for the first time and was instantly captivated by its beauty. I was strongly drawn to the way Japanese patterns were delicately carved into the glass, and the way they showed various expressions with the reflection of light. I wanted to become a craftsman who could create this beauty, and that's what led me to aim to become an Edo Kiriko craftsman.
2. What is the appeal of Edo Kiriko?
Matsuzaki : The greatest appeal of Edo Kiriko is that the cut patterns show a variety of different expressions depending on the reflection of light and the angle at which you view it. The cuts created by the artisan's skill allow each viewer to discover different beauty. The same glass will shine completely differently when viewed in natural daylight and in soft lighting at night. These moment-to-moment changes are the depth of Edo Kiriko and its never-ending charm.
3. What are your personal favorite products or patterns?
Matsuzaki : I particularly like the Shippo pattern . This pattern is made up of an infinite series of circles, symbolizing eternal harmony and prosperity. I think it's wonderful that the shape itself is imbued with meaning. When the Shippo pattern is carved using Edo Kiriko techniques, the light reflects in the circles as if dancing, giving the impression of movement, almost as if they are alive. The Shippo pattern is very appealing as a design that blends tradition and modernity.

4. What would you recommend to a customer who wants to buy Edo Kiriko?
Matsuzaki : For those purchasing Edo Kiriko for the first time, I recommend the M-515 series . This series is characterized by a simple yet elegant design. The lack of excessive decoration allows the delicate cutting techniques of Edo Kiriko to stand out, making it suitable for any occasion. It is particularly easy to use as an item to decorate the dining table, and also makes a perfect gift. Every time you pick it up, you will be filled with its refined beauty.

5. What do you think about the current state of Edo Kiriko?
Matsuzaki : Recently, we have been troubled by the number of inferior copies that have been sold on the market using the name Edo Kiriko. These products are cheap and appear genuine at first glance, but they lack the traditional techniques and quality. We fear that the increase in these counterfeit products will undermine the true value of Edo Kiriko. As artisans, we must continue to make efforts to convey its true value to our customers while preserving tradition. We hope that those who understand and support the true appeal of Edo Kiriko will be able to properly convey its value.
