What is colored glass? Glass used in Edo Kiriko: Edo Kiriko Explanation ⑥

One of the elements that creates the beauty of Edo Kiriko is "colored glass."
At first glance, it looks like colored glass, but it actually has a "two-layer structure" with a thin layer of colored glass layered on top of a clear glass surface.
This time, we will introduce the mechanism behind colored glass and why Glass Studio Saiho is committed to using this material.

What is colored glass?

Colored glass refers to a piece of clear glass that has a thin layer of colored glass fused to the outside.
It has a two-layer structure with an outer layer of colored glass and an inner layer of clear glass, and the colored layer is removed by cutting (kiriko), creating a beautiful contrast between the clear and colored parts.
This mechanism accentuates the depth and brilliance of light reflected and transmitted through it.

Thickness and delicate technique

The thickness of the colored glass that is applied is only about 1mm.
If it is too thick it will be heavy, and if it is too thin it will break when cut, so skilled techniques and temperature control are essential to create an even layer.
At Saiho, we mainly use traditional colors that combine transparency and depth, such as lapis lazuli, crimson, and golden red, and finish the material with the optimal thickness.

Why choose tinted glass?

Colored glass is not just a decoration, but a material that enriches the expression of Edo Kiriko.
No two pieces are exactly alike, with variations in color and light filtering depending on the depth and angle of the cut.
In particular, the lapis lazuli and beni colors are beloved by many fans as representative colors of Edo Kiriko.

Glass Studio Saiho's Commitment

At Glass Studio Saiho, we only use domestically produced glass for the overlay glass we use.
The transparency, excellent color development, and stable quality that are unique to Japanese-made products make a big difference in the finished product.
In addition, after cutting, the stone is thoroughly hand-polished, with each stone carefully polished by hand by a craftsman, resulting in a shine that is not inferior to that of crystal glass.

summary

Colored glass is an important material that supports the beauty of Edo Kiriko.
Within this thin layer, the experience, intuition and technique of the craftsman are condensed.
The beautiful contrast between transparency and color is what makes the traditional craft of Edo Kiriko truly special.
