Why Saiho is so particular about soda glass: Edo Kiriko Explanation ⑤

Why "Glass Studio Saihou" Insists on Soda-Lime Glass

In the first part, we introduced the material differences between crystal glass and soda-lime glass. In this second part, we will delve deeper into "Why Glass Studio Saihou insists on soda-lime glass."

Why Edo Kiriko is Expensive

All Edo Kiriko is handcrafted by artisans. It is not mass-produced, and each piece is imbued with skill and passion. Therefore, it is natural for the price to be higher, but it is worth every penny.

Our studio uses only domestic genuine crystal glass (24% or more lead oxide) and high-quality domestic soda-lime glass. We do not use inexpensive glass materials such as those made in China.

※Kiriko glasses available on the market at extremely low prices are often machine-cut or mass-produced overseas, and are different from Edo Kiriko made by artisans.

The Appeal of Soda-Lime Glass and Our Commitment

① Lightness and Ease of Handling

Soda-lime glass is lighter than crystal glass, making it suitable for everyday use. Especially as a gift, its "lightness and durability" are highly appreciated.

② Achieving High Quality While Keeping Prices Down

By reducing material costs, we can offer products at more affordable prices to our customers. However, we do not compromise on quality. Even with soda-lime glass, our artisans' skills bring out a brilliance comparable to crystal.

③ Artisans Handle All Processes

At Saihou, one artisan handles all processes, including polishing. The "hand-polishing" process, in particular, requires time and concentration and can be said to be the true essence of an artisan's skill.

It's More About "How to Utilize" the Material Than the Material Itself

This is not to say that crystal glass is bad. It's not about which is better or worse; what's important is "the technique to maximize the potential of that material."

At Glass Studio Saihou, we create works that leverage the charm of soda-lime glass, bringing special moments to everyday life.
