1. Why did you become an Edo Kiriko craftsman?
Matsuzaki: I've been interested in manufacturing since I was a child, and I was particularly fascinated by traditional Japanese patterns. While I was studying glass craft in college, I encountered Edo Kiriko for the first time, and its beauty immediately captivated me. I was strongly drawn to how Japanese patterns were delicately carved into the glass, revealing various expressions through light reflection. That's when I thought I wanted to become a craftsman who could create this beauty, and that was the motivation for me to aim to become an Edo Kiriko craftsman.
2. What is the appeal of Edo Kiriko?
Matsuzaki: The greatest appeal of Edo Kiriko is that the cut patterns show various expressions depending on the reflection of light and the viewing angle. The cuts created by the craftsman's skill allow each viewer to discover a different beauty. The same glass piece will emit completely different brilliance when viewed in natural daylight compared to soft evening lighting. This moment-to-moment change is the profoundness of Edo Kiriko and its never-ending charm.
3. What are your favorite products and patterns?
Matsuzaki: My particular favorite is the Shippo pattern. This pattern consists of endlessly linked circles, symbolizing eternal harmony and prosperity. I think it's wonderful that the shape itself carries such meaning. When the Shippo pattern is carved using Edo Kiriko techniques, light reflects as if dancing within the circles, creating a sense of lively movement. As a design that merges tradition and modernity, the Shippo pattern is very appealing.

5. What are your thoughts on recent Edo Kiriko products?
Matsuzaki: Recently, I'm very troubled by the prevalence of shoddy counterfeit products in the market that misuse the name of Edo Kiriko. These products are cheap and may look genuine at first glance, but they lack the traditional techniques and quality. I'm concerned that the true value of Edo Kiriko may be undermined by the increase in such imitations. We craftsmen must continue our efforts to preserve tradition and convey the authentic value to our customers. I hope that the true charm of Edo Kiriko will be correctly communicated to those who understand and support its value.
