Interview with an Edo Kiriko Craftsman, Part 7 | Glass Workshop Saiho

Interview with an Edo Kiriko craftsman: Mr. Asano talks about the "joy of glass cutting" and his expanding world of expression

1. Why did you become an Edo Kiriko craftsman?

Asano: I wanted to become an Edo Kiriko craftsman because I love the process of carving glass. Carving glass is a material that allows for an astonishing variety of expressions, and I found the process extremely fascinating. During that time, I came into contact with the traditional techniques of Edo Kiriko, and was drawn to its depth, so I decided to pursue this path.

2. What is the appeal of Edo Kiriko?

Asano: The appeal of Edo Kiriko lies in the fact that it uses traditional techniques and patterns, yet has an extremely wide range of expression. Each craftsman has their own individuality, which is reflected in their work, so even if the same techniques are used, completely different pieces are created. I also think that using Edo Kiriko on a daily basis enriches your daily life and lifts your spirits, which is another appealing aspect.

3. What are your personal favorite products or patterns?

Mr. Asano: My favorite products are the M-8573 series and M-086. These products have beautiful shapes and cuts, as well as wonderful colors. The M-8573 series in particular has beautiful blue-pink and pink-green colors, and I'm captivated by their beauty every time I pick them up. The M-086 is also impressive with its unique design and coloring.

4. What would you recommend to a customer who wants to buy Edo Kiriko?

Mr. Asano: I recommend the M-7528 series to those who are purchasing Edo Kiriko for the first time or those looking for a gift. It has a simple design, but comes in a wide variety of colors, making it suitable for many occasions. It's an easy product to choose as a gift, so I think anyone would be pleased.

5. What do you think about the current state of Edo Kiriko?

Asano: I feel that Edo Kiriko has recently become available in a wider variety of colors and with more unique designs. In particular, unprecedented and eccentric designs are appearing, and I get the impression that the world of Edo Kiriko is expanding rapidly. I believe that this evolution is attracting new fans and making the future of Edo Kiriko even brighter.

summary:
From Asano's interview, we learned about his passion for glass cutting and his deep understanding of the diverse expressive power of Edo Kiriko. The products he creates reflect his commitment to pursuing new beauty while respecting tradition. As Edo Kiriko continues to evolve, his works will no doubt continue to fascinate many people.
