Interview with an Edo Kiriko Craftsman Part 3 | Glass Workshop Saiho

Interview with an Edo Kiriko craftsman
Taro Yoshikawa talks about his passion for creation and the current state of Edo Kiriko

1. Why did you become an Edo Kiriko craftsman?

Yoshikawa : After dropping out of university, I wanted to learn a trade, as I've always loved making things. That's when I came across the world of Edo Kiriko, and was drawn to its beauty and the work of a craftsman, so I chose this path. I find it rewarding to create something with my own hands while making use of traditional techniques.

2. What is the appeal of Edo Kiriko?

Yoshikawa: I think the appeal of Edo Kiriko lies in its beauty and practicality. The delicate and intricate cuts shine beautifully in the light, but what's great is that it also has the functionality to be used as tableware in everyday life. I think the appeal of Edo Kiriko is that it's not just beautiful, but can also be enjoyed in everyday life.

3. What are your personal favorite products or patterns?

Yoshikawa: My favorite is the "spider web" pattern. This design combines delicacy and strength, and evokes the beauty and intricacy of nature. The cuts that unfold like a spider's web beautifully express the complexity and beauty that is unique to Edo Kiriko.

4. What would you recommend to a customer who wants to buy Edo Kiriko?

Yoshikawa: To be honest, there isn't a product I would particularly like to recommend right now. At present, I don't have a strong commitment or passion for the products I'm working on. However, in the future, I aim to create a product that I truly want to make, and be able to recommend it to customers with confidence. When that time comes, I hope you'll pick up one.

5. What do you think about the current state of Edo Kiriko?

Yoshikawa: I feel like Edo Kiriko has been gaining momentum little by little recently. It's great to see it gaining attention as a traditional craft, with an exhibition of new works being held in Ginza. I hope that there will be more opportunities to take on new challenges while preserving tradition.
