Edo Kiriko Craftsman Interview Part 2 | Glass Workshop Saiho

Interview with an Edo Kiriko craftsman
Yuri Yamada talks about her dreams of glass and the appeal of Edo Kiriko

1. Why did you become an Edo Kiriko craftsman?

Yamada : My childhood dream was to become a glass craftsman. My interest in glass itself has remained constant since I was a child, and I later studied various techniques and designs at the Tokyo Glass Art Institute. Of all the glass crafts, the one that captivated me the most was Edo Kiriko. Fascinated by its beauty, my desire to pursue the technique grew stronger, and I chose the path of becoming an Edo Kiriko craftsman.

2. What is the appeal of Edo Kiriko? (Imagine recommending it to someone else.)

Yamada : The appeal of Edo Kiriko is that it sparkles like a jewel. This sparkle is achieved by carving the outside using traditional techniques. Another attraction is the depth of the traditional patterns that have been passed down since the late Edo period. For example, the cuts act as anti-slip surfaces, so it also has practical uses. Edo Kiriko is easy to use in everyday life, yet makes you feel glamorous every time you use it. And above all, the warmth that can only be achieved through handcrafting is what makes Edo Kiriko so special.

3. What are your personal favorite products or patterns?

Yamada : All of Mitsuwa Glass's products are fascinating, so it's difficult to choose just one, but I particularly love the expression of M-898 . This design was created by Nemoto-san, and the beauty of its delicate cuts and colors really stands out. My favorite pattern is the "Kiku Tsunagi" (connected chrysanthemums). This pattern beautifully combines flamboyance and delicacy, and symbolizes the tradition and beauty of Edo Kiriko.

4. If you were to recommend a product to a customer who wants to buy Edo Kiriko, what would it be? (Please include the product number and reason)

Yamada: The products I recommend will vary depending on the customer's budget, purpose, and preferences, but personally I would recommend the M-250 . At first I thought the color variations wouldn't suit me, but when I saw it in person, it was truly beautiful. The movement created by the flowing design, with the reflection of the basket weave pattern and the beads, is very interesting, and the chrysanthemum crest on the bottom is also intricately detailed. This product is a wonderful blend of traditional and modern design, and is one that allows you to fully enjoy the charm of Edo Kiriko.

5. What do you think about the current state of Edo Kiriko?

Yamada: I feel that Edo Kiriko has recently become much more vibrant with an increased variety of colors. In addition to traditional designs, many products have appeared that use more unique and vibrant colors, giving rise to new appeal. I believe that these changes will further expand the possibilities of Edo Kiriko and bring its beauty to more people.
